Winter to Summer Closet Transition

Unless you’re lucky enough to have a full walk-in closet that allows you to showcase all of your clothing year-round, it’s essential to rework your wardrobe as the season transitions. With Summer just about in full swing, it’s time to ditch the things we’re not going to wear from our wardrobes and make sure our daily go-to’s are more accessible.

Recognize the Reason

First things first, recognize the importance of doing this. Experts say the average person wears only about ten percent of the clothing and accessories they own. With this in mind, it’s easy to see why. Our closets and dressers are overflowing, and with too many options to choose from, we’re almost always guaranteed to wear the things we see right when we open them up, which is more than likely what we put away last. So, with making the conscious decision to store our nonseasonal clothing out of sight, they’re out of mind. A clear mind helps you quickly assess what you own and get creative with how to wear it.

Season’s the Reason

Please go through all of your chunky, cold weather gear and take a good look at it. Did you wear it last fall or winter? If you answered “no,” consider donating it or trying to consign it. It’s always a good idea to keep at least a few sweaters that you can still wear on some chilly summer evenings, but for the most part, they need to be stored away. Now you have visual access to all your beautiful beach dresses, flowy tops, skirts, etc.

Cash In

If you’ve got enough time to utilize selling platforms like Poshmark, eBay, or Depop, it can definitely be worth your time to take photos of the items and list them for sale yourself. You might find in your seasonal organization that you have many handbags or shoes that you haven’t used in ages. You’d be surprised how much money you can get for flipping them on the internet. Though selling your unwanted apparel and accessories online may seem like it takes a ton of time, in reality, once you get the swing of it, it doesn’t take long at all. The process has come a long way from the beginning of eBay, and it’s all very streamlined now. Selling apps even send you the shipping label; all you have to do is pack and ship. You may just find a fun, new side hustle.

Small Design Tweaks

It’s worth your time to tweak some of the organizational elements of your closet while you’re doing your rehaul. These days there are all kinds of motivational videos on Youtube or TikTok showing you how simple it is to organize your closets. They even include links making adding these containers and shelves a breeze. If you’re a true DIYer, you could even do a slight build in your closet to make things display easier. If it’s within your budget, it’s a solid investment to hire a contractor to take care of the closet build for you. Your dream closet is just a phone call away, and you’ll absolutely see a return on your investment when you’re able to view all of your possessions with ease or if you decide to sell your home in the future.

Merchandise It

Taking the time to merchandise or stage your closet has more benefits beyond visual satisfaction. At some point, you loved the items in there enough to spend your hard-earned money on them. You’re more likely to use them when they regain that perceived value they possessed in the store from which you purchased them. If you take the time to merchandise your closet, you’ll fall in love with your pieces all over again and wear them more. You’ll also be less tempted to impulsively spend on similar items when you’re out shopping because you’ll know for certain that you already have an identical item at home since it was in your line of sight when you got dressed that morning.

An organized closet, like an organized home, lends to an organized mind. Implementing these steps with your wardrobe during each seasonal crossover will help you stay clutter-free and look as chic as ever.
