Bestselling Author Gary Douglas Talks the Beauty, Power, Fun & Excitement of Being a Lady

What does it mean to be a lady? According to the bestselling book, The Lady Book, it all comes down to getting in touch with the beauty, power, fun and excitement of who you are.

Gary Douglas is a best-selling author, international speaker, and innovative leader. And now, after years working with individuals around the world and leading workshops, has released his latest book to explore what it means to be a lady in all aspects of life–from business and money, to parenting, and to flirtation, seduction and sex. Douglas was inspired to write The Lady Book after watching classic films from the 1930s and 1940s, where female leads embodied powerful ladies. Today, he sat down with us to talk about the concept of being a lady and how men and women alike can learn to be more kind, understanding, and knowledgeable about the world.

The Lady Book is an epic read. Can you tell us what made you want to write this book?

I recently offered a nine-part class called The Lady in which class participants and I talked in depth about what it means to be a lady. During the class, I asked participants to watch several movies made in the 1930s and 1940s, and we had some wonderful conversations about the female and male characters, their relationships with one another, and their way of being in the world. Many of these female characters were ladies, and it was illuminating to see how they functioned in the world.  Female liberation was turned into an aggressive stance–instead of having allowance.  Not to see how to control life dynamically.

When you did the final read through for The Lady Book what was your favorite part of the book?

My favorite part of the book would be that it gives a place for women to know the power they have and the ability they can choose by not trying to be like a man.

What would you say is your largest influence?

Ladies of old. They had a completely different way of being in the world. They always knew who they were and that they were in charge, but they also knew how to receive, and they didn’t feel they needed to emasculate men or prove they were equal to or better than men. I would like to invite the world to this possibility.

With so many people living on the go in these days, how do you find balance with family, exercise and traveling to fit in so much writing?

I desire for the world to know that greater possibilities are available and for people to get how crucial they are to those possibilities. Writing is one of the ways I invite and engage with people so I make it a priority.

I’m sure your fans are wondering what is next for you. Can you give us any hints?

I like to leave people in question. Keep them wondering.
