Removing Fat – Is Liposuction Really Effective?

Losing unwanted body fat is not easy. It takes time and a lot of effort. To look slim and smart there are a lot of methods such as diet control and exercises but the most trending method nowadays for fat removal is Liposuction. People are choosing liposuction over other methods because it helps in achieving an attractive body shape without having to spend years on fitness programs, dieting, and exercise. It is by far the quickest method of removing fat.


Liposuction or lipoplasty is a cosmetic surgical method used for removal of fat from the body and to improve the physical appearance leading to improving the self-confidence of an individual. Liposuction became popular in the 1980s and this method can be used to remove fat from different body parts such as:

  • Thighs
  • Buttocks and hips
  • Abdomen
  • Upper Arm
  • Wait
  • Chest
  • Cheek 

This procedure can be carried out alone or with any other cosmetic surgery procedures as well. It can be carried out in a person who is within 30% of his ideal weight, and has firm and elastic skin. 

Liposuction is not recommended if a person has any health problem related to blood flow, or is a patient of diabetes or a weak immune system.


Liposuction is an efficient method of fat removal. It has some advantages and disadvantages. The benefits of liposuction are:

  • It gives long-lasting results.
  • It helps in enhancing physical appearance.
  • It can be targeted to remove fat in a particular area.
  • It is a less invasive fat-reduction method.
  • It helps in improving your asymmetric appearance.
  • It helps in boosting self-esteem.

  • At times it may contour irregularities.
  • Numbness.
  • Burns from instrument.


Liposuction does not have a lot of risk factor but there possible risks include the likes of:

  • Complication from Anesthesia.
  • Infection due to insertion of instruments into the body.
  • Damage of nerves, blood vessels and other body organs.
  • Fat embolism.


Tumescent Liposuction

In this fat removing surgery a high amount of anesthesia is injected into the area being treated.


In this technique an ultrasound probe is used to break the fat of the desired area without disturbing the surrounding tissues.

Ultrasonic assisted Liposuction

As the name indicates, in this method ultrasound waves are used to change the state of fat and it is converted into liquid before it is removed from the body.

Power assisted Liposuction

In this method a motor powered cannula is used to make the procedure more comfortable for the patient.


This procedure does not require a long stay but in the hospital but it usually depends on the type of surgery. The patient may experience some type of bruising and swelling for some time. After liposuction the patient will need to wear a compression garment for a month or two to control the swelling which occurs after surgery.


The results of liposuction are not permanent, if the person will not take care of his diet then the chances of weight gain are there.

Like any other surgery, it is important to know and research before going through any medical procedures. Liposuction – surgeons facilitate patients at their best by answering and satisfying them.
