Toronto van attack: Minassian culpable of killing ten people

A Canadian man who killed ten people by ploughing a van into pedestrians in Toronto has been found guilty. The man had 26 charges on him, and he is guilty of all related to the attack.

Alek Minassian had admitted to the attack already. But his advocates contended that he was not criminally responsible for them. Alek has autism spectrum disorder, and it was due to that.

Justice Anne Malloy has ousted this part, saying the attack was an act of a reasoning mind.

Alek Minassian has faced ten charges of murder and 16 charges of attempt to murder.

Throughout the ruling, Justice Anne Malloy refused to name the attacker, who is 28. Instead referred to him as John Doe and said she would not give him the eminence he desired from the start.

Ms Malloy affirmed his diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. But ruled that he was capable of understanding his actions in April 2018. His steps were both morally and legally misguided, and he knew it said, Justice Malloy.

Accused Alek Minassian had hired the van some three weeks before he used it as a weapon on a major Toronto street. He told the investigators that he had set out to kill as many people as he could. Moreover, Alek said he drew his inspiration from the misogynistic ‘incel’ movement of mostly online groups. The group is of young men who blame their lack of sexual activity on women.

When the investigators asked how he felt about causing the harm and killing the people, Alek replied that he felt as if he accomplished his mission.
