Dr. Garrett Wirth, MD, MS, FACS has been known for his expertise in Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery. Over the last few decades, breast reconstruction has undergone a drastic change due to the development of new techniques to make this procedure smoother, less painful and more rewarding for patients. Dr. Garrett Wirth is one of those surgeons that has contributed a lot to the refinement and modification of breast reconstruction surgery.
He is serving as the Chief of the Plastic Surgery department at the Tibor Rubin Long Beach Veterans Affairs Hospital and Medical Director at the Wound Healing Center at MemorialCare Long Beach Hospital, in Long Beach, California, USA. Dr. Garrett Wirth has served as the Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of California. Currently, he has been involved in his own practice, Wirth Plastic Surgery, in Newport Beach, California.
Dr. Garrett Wirth is the co-inventor of a breast reconstruction product – FlexHD Pliable MAXTM with MTF Biologics (Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation). The surgery makes it possible to build a better breast and it is simply described as an “internal bra”. Through his extensive research with 3 other co-inventors, at the team at MTF Biologics, he concluded that the new design has the potential to offer benefits to all the women undergoing breast reconstruction.
Dr. Wirth has trained around 50 plastic surgery residents and has mentored more than 20 researchers along with teaching hundreds of medical students. During his practice years in the field, he has performed over 20,000 procedures including abdominoplasty, rhinoplasty, breast augmentations, breast reconstructions, tissue expanders, breast implants, fat grafting, etc.
According to Wirth, “FlexHD Pliable MAXTM has been designed to create more elegant breast pocket with a nearly two-dimensional pattern transforming into a three-dimensional shape in order to create an “internal bra” to offer support for both tissue expanders and breast implants.” This invention is a big contribution from Dr. Garrett Wirth to the field of plastic surgery and breast reconstruction. It is also helping breast cancer patients to recover well after a full mastectomy.
