4 Things To Understand About Youtube Ads

“YouTube is my favorite place to be advertising right now,” says marketing expert Douglas James, who has helped over 1500 small business grow their customer base. With two billion unique visitors per month and statistics that show 90% of Youtube ads drive a lift in brand recall, it’s not hard to see why. But according to James, understanding why Youtube ads are effective is just as important as understand how to use them. He breaks it down to four main points:

Consumers are actively engaged

Youtube is a video platform, but it’s also a search engine. In fact, it’s the most visited site after Google. “People are actively searching for a solution to a particular problem. How to change a tire. How to write a book. How to make money online,” explains James. “It’s not passive. They’re already in a position where they want to watch a video, so if you can get your advert to be seen while they’re in that state, who do you think they’re going to be more inclined to do business with?”

Adverts are geared towards likely customers

If you’ve ever watched a Youtube video, you’ll notice that the adverts are often similar in content to the video that you’re watching. For example, someone watching a video on how to change a tire might be targeted by adverts for tire brands. “The content is right in line with what they’re watching. The offer is very congruent. The advert is right in the middle of a video that’s highly relevant to what the brand is offering,” explains James. Subsequently, the ads are finding viewers more likely to have an interest in buying their product or service.

You can steal your competitor’s audience

“A lot of people don’t know this, but you can actually target your competitor’s websites,” says James. Brands can build an audience profile of everyone who has ever visited their competitor’s website and target their adverts directly to them. “No other platform right now allows you to do something like that. YouTube is the only one and it’s incredible.”

Pre-roll skippable ads are the most effective

Youtube offers users the option of skipping an advert after 5 seconds. According to marketers, these pre-roll (skippable) ads are the most effective form of video advertising, garnering 29% of votes. However, with our ever-decreasing attention spans, it’s growing more and more difficult to capture our audience’s attention and keep it. According to James, the first 5 seconds are the most important part of your advert, because it determines whether or not users will continue watching. “You want to be quick direct to the point. Your content needs to be eye-catching. You need to get their attention, educate them and give them a solid solution to their problem,” he says.
